Dragon Medical One Training - Customizing Vocabulary
Add and train custom words in Dragon Medical One vocabulary so names, drugs, and local terms recognize correctly across devices.
A refined dictionary for your field of medicine improves accuracy and reduces how often you need vocabulary training. When you first log into Dragon Medical One, set the appropriate specialty.
This tutorial assumes you already have Dragon Medical One installed.
Choose the right specialty
If you are not a physician, choose "Clinical Administration" for a broader vocabulary. Matching specialty at login gives Dragon a stronger starting dictionary for the terms you use most.
What may still need correction
Once you begin dictating, most medical acronyms, words, and phrases are recognized correctly. A few items may still need correction, including:
- New pharmaceuticals
- Local hospitals
- Names of colleagues or referring clinicians
- Terms that may be specific to another specialty
As an example, say "Dr. Sarah Lilley" and Dragon may spell the last name as "Lily".
Add a word or phrase to vocabulary
Because you may say "Dr. Sarah Lilley" often, teach Dragon the correct spelling.
1. Say "Select Dr. Sarah Lilley" to highlight the incorrect output.
2. Say "Add that to vocabulary".
3. In the Add Word box, correct the spelling and choose "Use Default Pronunciation".
4. Save it to your custom speech profile.
From then on, "Dr. Sarah Lilley" should spell correctly. Your speech profile is stored in the cloud, so the same recognition follows you to other machines.
Tips when adding vocabulary
Select the full name to correct, not only "Lily". If you only change "Lily", sentences like "patient is allergic to lily pollen" could incorrectly replace "lily" with "Lilley".
Use "Use Default Pronunciation" when the spelling matches how it sounds. If the word does not sound like it is spelled, use the microphone button to record how you say it, or choose "Enter the word as you would pronounce it".
Manage Vocabulary
You can also view, add, edit, or train vocabulary from Manage Vocabulary. Open it by saying "Manage Vocabulary", or by using the Dragon menu and selecting the same option.
Train a vocabulary word
If a newly added phrase still errors, train it with your voice. In Manage Vocabulary, click the word you need to train, then choose "Train".
Record the pronunciation
On the Train Word screen, click the large microphone button. With a handheld microphone such as the Nuance PowerMic III, you do not need to press the physical mic button - the mic is active after you click the icon. The dialog prompts you to speak the word or phrase, then Dragon turns the microphone off when you finish.
For best results, train only in a quiet room with minimal background noise.
