Dragon Medical One Training - Auto-text template creation
Create Dragon Medical One Auto-texts and templates with spoken forms, square-bracket fields, and dictation box workflows.
Auto-text commands are custom voice commands for inserting specific text into a document. Use them for content you reuse frequently - they save time and effort and reduce errors.
Typical uses include signatures, frequently typed addresses, and repeated text blurbs such as normal patient status notes. Auto-texts and templates use the same process. Templates add square brackets [] as placeholders for text and/or default values.
This tutorial assumes you already have Dragon Medical One installed.
How to open Manage Auto-texts
There are several ways to access Dragon Medical One Auto-texts:
- Speak the voice command "manage auto-texts"
- If you already have the text you want to turn into an Auto-text, highlight it and say "make that an auto-text"
- Select "Manage Auto-texts" in the DragonBar context menu shown when you click the flame icon
Create a new Auto-text
When you open the Auto-text window through the context menu or the "manage auto-texts" command, select the + in the lower left corner to add a new entry and fill in the highlighted fields.
When you enter the Name of the Auto-text, the Spoken Form populates to match. Keep these the same unless the spoken form needs to differ from the written form. Matching names make it easy to see what to say in your Auto-text list.
If you arrived here by selecting text and saying "make that an auto-text", the Content section is already filled with your selection. That lets you reuse content from your EHR, Microsoft Word, or most other Windows applications.
Create from the Dictation Box
You can also create an Auto-text from the Dictation Box by dictating or typing the text. For a template, insert square brackets (as pictured) to act as field placeholders for rapid navigation and completion.
When the content is ready, highlight it (or say "select all"), then say "create auto-text" or "make that an auto-text".
Clinical templates and field navigation
For clinicians, Auto-texts become especially powerful when built for specific encounter types. Sections such as physical exams, review of systems, and history of present illness can include the most common responses while leaving placeholders for parts that change.
Once triggered, Dragon automatically highlights the first set of brackets. If the default text applies, say "field complete" or press the check mark on your physical microphone or PowerMic Mobile app. That removes the brackets, capitalizes when needed, and moves you to the next bracket-delimited field.
