Dragon Medical One Training - Anchoring Text

How to use Anchored Speech Focus in Dragon Medical One with voice commands or hotkeys so you can dictate into one window while reviewing another.

Updated 7/29/2026
One of the trickiest parts of clinical dictation is multitasking between programs. Clinicians often need to move between charts, research, and notes while keeping documentation moving. Dragon Medical One supports that workflow with Anchored Speech Focus. This tutorial assumes you already have Dragon Medical One installed and can use the DragonBar.

What Anchored Speech Focus does

Anchoring speech focus locks Dragon dictation to a chosen application or cursor location. After you anchor, you can click into another window to review information while Dragon keeps sending text into the anchored field, even if that window is now hidden behind other apps. That makes it easier to review multiple documents while capturing quick notes, then clean those notes into a finished assessment when you are done.

How to tell when anchoring is on

When speech focus is anchored, the microphone recording indicator on the DragonBar shows a lock image.

Anchor and release with voice commands

The preferred way to turn anchoring on is the verbal command "Anchor Speech Focus". That locks Dragon input to the place your cursor is when you speak the phrase. To move the locked input location, put your cursor in the new field and say "Anchor Speech Focus" again. When you are ready to stop anchoring, say "Release Speech Focus".

Anchor with a hotkey

You can also use Anchored Speech Focus with a keyboard shortcut. By default the hotkey is Ctrl+Alt+A. You can change that combination in Options.

From the DragonBar, click the Dragon flame icon and select Options. In Options, open the Hotkeys section on the left. Change the key combination for Anchor Speech Focus and Release Speech Focus as needed. When you are done, click Apply All at the bottom to save your changes.
